Core Programs

Music Education

Music is a universal language, and at the heart of our Music Education program is the belief that every child deserves the chance to speak it. We provide children in slum communities with opportunities to explore their musical potential through comprehensive training in instrumental skills, vocal techniques, and music theory. From learning to play instruments like drums, guitars, and keyboards to mastering the art of singing and vocal expression, we’ve designed the program to unlock their creativity and nurture their talents. Beyond the technical aspects, we focus on creating meaningful experiences that inspire and empower.

Additionally,  we organize concerts, recitals, and community events where children perform, build confidence, and share their talents with others. Knowing the weight of trauma from on-going displacement some of them carry, we hold therapeutic music sessions offering an outlet for emotional healing and self-expression. Then, to keep them connected to their roots, we also emphasize cultural preservation, teaching traditional songs and instruments that celebrate their heritage. Together, these elements make music not just an activity but a transformative tool, helping these children discover resilience, joy, and a sense of belonging.

Literacy Enhancement

Many children in Uganda, especially in slum areas, lack access to quality early childhood education services. The early childhood education sector is heavily reliant on private providers and therefore unaffordable for low-income families. Although primary education has improved, particularly with the implementation of Universal Primary Education (UPE), which has increased enrollment rates, many children drop out before completing primary school, often due to poverty, child labour, and early marriage and pregnancy. Many children are also not meeting expected learning outcomes due to poor educational infrastructure, insufficient teaching and learning materials, and overcrowded classrooms. Accordingly:

  • Only 1 in 10 children has access to formal early childhood care and development. (Human Rights Watch)
  • Only 40% of children complete primary education and only 16% complete upper-secondary education. (Human Rights Watch)
  • The number of children not able to read and understand an age-appropriate text by age 10 is estimated to be 83%. (UNESCO)
  • Nearly half of all girls are forced into marriage before reaching adulthood, with 43% married before they turn 18. (UNFPA).
  • The revised Ugandan curriculum (2020) heavily incorporates ICT, but many schools lack the necessary computers and internet access to effectively teach and assess students on these skills, yet these are the main ingredients of the revised curriculum. (NCDC, 2024) and (EPRC, 2024)

At Temple Talents Foundation, we believe education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty for children in slum communities. Unfortunately, many of these children—often orphaned, abandoned, or part of child-headed households—face immense challenges that make them the least likely to attend school and the most at risk of dropping out. That’s why we work to help them stay in school or return if they’ve dropped out. Through playful and engaging learning activities, we teach basic literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. We nurture a love for reading and writing through storytelling, read-aloud sessions, and book clubs. To improve their numeracy, we equip them with essential math skills like arithmetic. We also introduce them to the responsible use of technology, offering opportunities to learn and practice skills on computers, smartphones, and tablets—from typing and email basics to online safety.

Skills Development

Children living in slums often face barriers to formal employment and are highly vulnerable to exploitative or low-wage work. Our Skills Development program equips them with essential life skills and practical vocational training, preparing them not only for jobs but for life itself. Through this program, children and youth learn critical life skills like decision-making, effective communication, and emotional resilience. They are also empowered with health and hygiene knowledge, including sexual and reproductive health education, enabling them to make informed and healthier choices. On the vocational front, participants gain hands-on training in skills such as tailoring, baking, carpentry, hairdressing and musical instrument building, repair and maintenance.

For those with entrepreneurial aspirations, we teach basic business skills, financial literacy, and how to launch small businesses. Practical projects like crafting beadwork or making sanitary pads offer additional income-generating opportunities. These skills often bring immediate and life-changing results: a young girl who learns to sew can make school uniforms, while a boy who picks up baking can sell cakes to support his family. Beyond the practical benefits, these children gain hope, confidence, and independence in an environment that so often takes them away. By acquiring practical, sustainable skills, they take meaningful steps toward breaking the cycle of poverty and building a brighter future.
