Literacy & Learning

Reading, writing, and digital literacy open doors to lifelong learning.

Children in underserved and low-resource communities often grow up without learning materials or supportive learning spaces. Reading books are scarce, computers are limited, writing is reduced to rote exercises, and learning can feel intimidating. Without early opportunities to engage with language in meaningful ways, children fall behind—not because they lack ability, but because they lack access.

In the urban slums and displaced communities we serve, many children learn in overcrowded homes, temporary shelters, or informal settlements where books are a luxury and quiet learning spaces are rare. School interruptions, poverty, and displacement further widen learning gaps. Yet, with the right support, these children show remarkable curiosity, creativity, and resilience.

Help us grow our children's library to 1000+ books.

Temple Talents Approach to
Literacy & Learning

Our Literacy & Learning programme is built around three connected components that support children to read, write, and engage confidently with language and technology in ways that reflect their lived experiences.

Engaging, child-friendly libraries

Our centre and mobile libraries give children access to engaging, age- and locally relevant books for independent reading, shared reading, and joyful learning.

Creative, Reflective #Freewriting

Our #Freewrites improve children’s writing skills and empower them to turn their lived experiences into stories, reflecting on the past and present and imagining the future.

Digital literacy & creative tech

Our digital lab equips children with basic computer skills, typing, and creative technology tools to explore, create, and prepare for learning and work in the digital world.

Reading Books and Spaces

Access to books that are engaging, age-appropriate, and culturally relevant ensures children develop critical literacy skills that form the foundation for their success in school and life.

Our safe, inclusive and welcoming, child-friendly centre library and mobile libraries bring a rich variety of reading materials directly to children in under-resourced neighborhoods, removing barriers to access, encouraging children to explore independently, share reading experiences in groups, and fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Children’s Library

Our children’s library provides a safe, welcoming space where children can access engaging, age- and locally relevant books in a calm and supportive environment. Designed specifically for children, the library encourages independent reading, shared reading, and guided learning through reading corners, group sessions, and quiet study spaces.

By ensuring access to books, the library supports literacy development, curiosity, and a sustained love of reading for disadvantaged children with no books at home or in their schools.

Mobile Libraries

Our mobile libraries extend the reach of our literacy work beyond the centre, bringing books directly to children in under- resourced neighborhoods and communities with limited access to reading materials. By transporting curated collections of books to schools, community spaces, and informal learning settings, the mobile libraries remove barriers related to distance and cost.

These visits create opportunities for group reading, storytelling, and book sharing, ensuring that more children can regularly engage with books and develop reading habits, regardless of their location.

Free Writing & Creative Expression

Writing is a powerful tool for learning, self-expression, and emotional well-being. Our #Freewrites program uses creative writing as a way for children to explore their thoughts, reflect on their experiences, and develop essential literacy skills. Through a supportive, child-centred approach, the program encourages freedom of expression while guiding children to shape their ideas into meaningful stories, fostering confidence, resilience, and a sense of voice.

#FreeWrites

At the heart of #Freewrites is the freedom to write without fear. Children gather in a calm, welcoming space, often outdoors, sitting on mats or stools with only a pen and a notebook resting on their laps. There are no desks, no rigid seating, and no pressure to perform. A simple, relatable prompt—sometimes a single word or short phrase drawn from everyday life—is shared, and a timer is set for 10 to 15 minutes.

During this time, children write continuously, letting their thoughts flow freely onto the page. Spelling, grammar, and structure do not matter. What matters is expression. Children follow where the prompt leads, writing whatever stories, memories, or ideas emerge. This pressure-free process helps unlock creativity, build writing fluency, and develop confidence. By removing judgment and correction at the start, children learn to trust their voices and experience writing as joyful, personal, and empowering.

Reflection & Story Development

Once the writing time ends, children return to their drafts with the support of trained mentors. Together, they read, discuss, and gently revise the pieces—clarifying ideas, refining language, and shaping raw drafts into more legible, coherent stories. This stage is guided by reflection rather than correction, encouraging children to think more deeply about their lived experiences, present realities, and future hopes.

Selected pieces are further refined, compiled, and published as part of curated collections. These stories are shared and sold, with proceeds supporting children’s educational needs and sustaining future #Freewrites sessions. Beyond building writing skills, this reflective process offers children a powerful emotional outlet—helping them process experiences, articulate feelings, and see their voices valued in tangible ways. Through mentorship and storytelling, children grow not only as writers, but as confident thinkers and self-aware individuals.

Digital Skills for the Future

Digital literacy is increasingly essential for education, communication, and opportunity in today’s world. Our Digital Lab equips children with foundational digital skills while creating opportunities for creative exploration and learning. By introducing technology in a safe, supportive environment, we help children build confidence, curiosity, and practical skills that prepare them to engage with digital tools for learning, creativity, and future opportunities.

Foundational Computer Skills

Our Digital Lab introduces children to essential computer skills that are increasingly necessary for learning and everyday life. Through hands-on, guided sessions, children learn basic computer use, typing, file handling, and safe navigation of digital tools. Many of the children we work with have limited or no prior exposure to computers, so the lab provides a supportive environment where they can build confidence, curiosity, and independence while developing practical skills that support their education and future opportunities.

Creative Technology & Digital Expression

Beyond basic skills, the Digital Lab encourages children to use technology as a creative and expressive tool. Children explore digital storytelling, simple design tools, and creative software that allow them to turn ideas, stories, and drawings into digital formats. By integrating creativity with technology, the lab helps children develop problem-solving skills, digital confidence, and a sense of ownership over their learning. This approach ensures that children are not only technology users, but also creators, capable of expressing themselves and imagining new possibilities through digital platforms.
